Working to end experiments on animals!

Despite a growing change in community attitudes towards the use of animals in medical and scientific research, the West Australian research community is still utilising large numbers of animals in both research and teaching every year.

Instead of developing new, innovative non-animal techniques it is clinging stubbornly to research methods first adopted in the 19th century, to the detriment of both humans and animals.

Please note: "Teaching" refers to animals used in schools and universities in Western Australia and can include animals used for dissection. "Research" refers to animals used in universities, medical/product/research laboratories (both private and public). This absolutely does not imply that Anti Vivisection WA (Inc) either condones or agrees with the use of animals in experimentation! The words "teaching" and "research" are used here because they are referred to by the Dept of Health on their Statistical Returns.

VIVISECTION IS ON THE INCREASE - PLEASE HELP US STOP THIS TERRIBLE & TRAGIC TREND!

VIVISECTION IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

It's not surprising to find that the usual shroud of secrecy surrounds animal use in Western Australia, with members of Animal Ethics Committees forced to sign confidentiality agreements. This means that researchers are not accountable to the public for their use of animals and that the public has no means of evaluating the validity or otherwise of the research it is funding. Such secrecy allows animal-based research to continue unhindered.

However both graduate and undergraduate research and teaching using animals takes place at:

  • University of Western Australia
  • QE11 Medical Centre
  • Murdoch University
  • Curtin Universities
  • Royal Perth Hospital
  • Princess Margaret Hospital
  • CSIRO
  • Department of Agriculture

Sadly, dissection of animals is still conducted at:

  • John Septimus Roe

UK VIVISECTION STATISTICS

Distressingly, United Kingdom government statistics published on Thursday 8 December 2005 reveal the twelfth consecutive rise in the annual toll of animals sacrificed in British laboratories. According to the figures, in 2004 2,778,692 animals were subjected to experiments that are officially regarded as potentially 'causing pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm' [1]. This is an increase of 57,093 animals, or 2.1%, compared to 2003.
